BGHS members have the opportunity of applying for a nine-month research stay at Johns Hopkins University (JHU), Baltimore, Maryland, USA. This cooperation allows to research at one of the best research institutes on America's East Coast. JHU's History Department has a strong focus on historical research and many highly-qualified doctoral candidates. Doctoral candidates in sociology should therefore be working on historically oriented questions. During their participation in the Johns Hopkins University graduate programme, doctoral candidates profit from intensive courses in small groups. They will also have more than enough time for their own dissertation projects. The Baltimore exchange programme is limited to one place per year. The stay will be between September and May of the university year.
Doctoral candidates in the Department of History at Johns Hopkins University have the opportunity to apply for a six- to nine-month research stay at BGHS. During that time, they will participate in the doctoral programme of the Graduate School, in its research, curricular, and social activities. They also will be able to take German language classes and still have enough time for their own dissertation projects. While disciplinary strength is the prerequisite for interdisciplinary exchange, the BGHS fosters dialogue on theoretical and methodological issues in its research fields. The exchange programme is limited to one place per year. Stays will either start in September/October or in April/May of the university year.
During their stay, doctoral scholars receive a stipend of EUR 1,200 per month. In addition the BGHS pays a foreign allowances, which is approximately based on the German Research Foundation (DFG) rules. Doctoral position holders of the BGHS will receive during their stay at the JHU in addition to their salary an international per diem which is approximately based on the recommended rates. The trip to and from Bielefeld/Baltimore also will be reimbursed up to EUR 700 upon submission of travel receipts.
