The ZiF strives for the interaction between art and sciences and considers the organization of art exhibitions and art performances to be part of its mission. The idea underlying ZiF Art was introduced spontaneously in the context of a research group and—at least in the beginning—this was no continuous cultural activity. Each year, the ZiF hosts up to art exhibiitons in its interiors.
On the occasion of ZiF's 25 anniversary in 1994, an additional "art-site" was created on the front yard. In irregular intervals, a Zeitskulptur is erected on this place, an installation exposed to wind and weather for the period of one year that changes and—during this process—is intended to convey the factors "time" and "processuality" of artistic and scientific work.
Whenever possible, the ZiF tries to relate its artistic activities to its academic activities so as to stimulate border crossings not only within the sciences but also between science and art.
The ZiF invites artists to apply for support of an exhibition. Decisions on applications are taken by the ZiF Art Committee. Exhibitions are supported by the Westfälisch-Lippische Universitätsgesellschaft.
