Getting to Bielefeld

Arriving at Frankfurt Airport:

If you arrive from outside Europe, you will most probably land at Frankfurt Airport, the biggest international Airport in Germany. From here the best option would be to continue your trip to Bielefeld by -> train. Taking a connecting flight to an airport near Bielefeld is possible, but not really recommendable, as time saving will be minimal (see below Arriving at other Airports near Bielefeld).

To continue by train from Frankfurt Airport to Bielefeld, you have to direct yourself to the Long-Distance Train Station (not to be confused with the train station for regional trains, see -> map of Frankfurt Airport). From here, trains in direction to Bielefeld go very regularly at least once per hour and it will take you around three hours by train to travel from Frankfurt Airport to Bielefeld Main Station. The fastest connection you will get by using the ICE trains and changing trains once in Cologne. You can purchase the train tickets at the long-distance train station on Level 3 of the AIRail Terminal or even at the regional train station in Terminal 1, B Concourse, Level 0. A one way ticket will cost you around 100 Euro. You can also use the -> AIRail Service, which means booking a connecting train together with your flight ticket. If you arrive at Frankfurt Airport by plane and have an AIRail ticket for continuing by train to Cologne, you can go right through the AIRail Terminal which is adjacent to the long-distance train station at Frankfurt Airport. You collect your bags from AIRail Terminal luggage claim and take it through customs there, before boarding the ICE train to Cologne, that is waiting for you.

Arriving at other Airports near Bielefeld:

Bielefeld does not have an own airport. However, the airports of
-> Paderborn-Lippstadt, -> Münster-Osnabrück, -> Düsseldorf, -> Köln/Bonn and -> Hannover are very good choices if you arrive by plane from within Europe. From Düsseldorf and Köln/Bonn there are direct ICE trains going to Bielefeld Main Station. At Paderborn-Lippstadt, Münster-Osnabrück, and Hannover there are bus shuttle services to the next railway stations with connections to Bielefeld. Travelling from one of these airports to Bielefeld Main Station will take you at least 1 ½ but not more than 2 ½ hours.

Airport transfer by taxi

If you have a lot of luggage or you are travelling with your family the airport transfer might be a good way to get to the airport more comfortable. In Bielefeld there are several taxi companies and others, which offer those transfers to every German airport. Of course, the longer distances are quiet expensive so following there is an overview of one company ? teuto-taxi - with its prices to the closest airports:

Airport Distance Driving hours price
Paderborn/ Lippstadt 60 km 1h 69 €
Münster/ Osnabrück 90 km 1h 20Min. 103 €
Dortmund 103 km 1h 30Min. 118 €
Hannover/ Langenhagen 120 km 1h 20 Min. 129 €
Düsseldorf 187 km 2h 215 €
Bremen 201 km 2h 30 Min. 231 €

These prices are for one transfer to an airport for up to four persons. If you would like to make use of a transfer, you have to do a reservation at least 24h before your flight. The contact details and the homepage for further information of this company you find here:

Almost every taxi company would drive you to the airport, but teuto-taxi is one of the companies, which specialized in this issue. The prices always differ a little bit, depending on the number of persons and the airport, but of course it is worth it to compare the prices.

Hereinafter you find the contact details of two other companies in Bielefeld, which are concentrating on airport transfers.

The Fahrservice Bielefeld is not a usual taxi company, but specialized for transfers. Their offers and regular prices you find here:

There is as well a company, which offers an airport transfer with little buses. On their homepage you have a calculator, which tells you the price for the number of persons and the airport directly:

Like in other companies you should book the transfer at least one day in advance. This company has little buses, which have room for between 6-20 persons. So it is probable that there are more persons than your family in the vehicle. The contact details are:

Arriving at Bielefeld Main Station:

If you arrive to Bielefeld from other German cities, using train is surely the best way of transport. As Bielefeld is an ICE Station, it can be easily reached from many major cities using the fast ICE trains (Cologne-Bielefeld 2 hours, Berlin-Bielefeld 2 ½ hours). Once you have arrived at Bielefeld Main Railway Station (Hauptbahnhof), you can take the tram, Route 4 (Stadtbahnlinie 4), to the university stop (Haltestelle Universität) (travel time: 7 minutes). To reach the tram station, you have to leave Bielefeld Main Station using the main exit and go straight for approx. 60 meters until you reach the entrance to the underground tram station on your left side. Once you have descended to the intermediary level and purchased your ticket to university at one of the automatic selling machines you can further descend to Platform 2, where tram Route 4 departs towards university.

Of course, taxis are also always available directly in front of the Hauptbahnhof. Currently (July 2009), the trip to the university costs about 10 Euro.

By Road:

If you arrive by car, you should leave Autobahn A2 at the Exit Bielefeld-Zentrum (city centre), then follow the Detmolder Straße direction Zentrum (6 km, approx. 10 minutes). From the centre, the route to the Universität is signposted over Kreuzstraße, Oberntorwall, Stapenhorststraße, and Kurt-Schumacher-Straße.

On the -> Bielefeld University homepage you will find a city map as well as local transport timetables.
