Charges and Costs

For the winter semester 2011/12 there will be no tuition fees at Bielefeld University anymore. The only fee each registered student is charged with is a semester fee of 209,58 Euro (winter semester 2011/12).

The semester fee includes the contribution to the "Semesterticket" for free public transport in the city and area of Bielefeld and on regional trains and busses in North-Rhine Westphalia for the whole semester, i.e. six months. More information ist provided by the Student Union. Studying in Germany is comparatively expensive, as the cost of living is high, though this varies regionally. The following monthly costs can be expected: the rent in a student hall of residence, in private halls, rooms or flats amounts to up to 270 EUR per month; health insurance is about 78 EUR per month; a meal in the students' canteen (Mensa) costs less than 3 EUR. According to lifestyle, about 150 EUR per month can be expected to be spent on food. So the cost of living amounts to approx. 600 EUR monthly, i.e. some 7,000 EUR per annum. The demands of the study course and the regulations on work permits for foreign students make it very difficult to work during the lecture periods. It is therefore important to have clarified the question of funding BEFORE entering the Federal Republic of Germany.
