Studying in Bielefeld

This web page is intended to give international students who are interested in a course of studies at the University of Bielefeld a first orientation as to the possible fields of study, the application procedure and the conditions for acceptance.

The topics dealt with are mainly directed towards interested persons world-wide who wish to pursue a normal course of studies in Bielefeld. Applicants from a European country, who already do study there and are interested in a limited study visit in Bielefeld, please have a look at the information for ERASMUS students. There, more detailed prerequisites for a participation in ERASMUS can be found.

Students who participate in exchange programmes or plan the study visit in the framework of a university partnership have to refer to the prerequisites determined by the programme. Please turn to the responsible authority at your home university.

University

There are about 17,000 students studying at the University (as of 2004), which was founded as a state institution in 1967. At present, approximately 1,700 foreign students from more than 100 countries are enrolled in Bielefeld. Most of them come from Turkey, Greece, Russia, Poland, South Korea and the People's Republic of China.

The University is characterised by the close contact between students and teaching staff and the numerous service offers for the students. For more details see the section on Institutions at Bielefeld University.

With a few exceptions (medicine and engineering subjects) it is possible to study any subject here; at present there are 13 faculties (departments).

Now a word about the structure of the University:
Finding your way about the building is not as difficult as it may first seem. When a room is given as A4-103, E0-115, C5-208 etc, this can be decoded as follows: the letter (e.g. "A") stands for the wing (that is the tract), the number which follows (e.g. "4") gives the storey (floor, level), and the number after the hyphen (e.g. "103") shows the number of the room. Besides, there is a plan of the building by each lift.

International Cooperation

At present the university is involved in more than 100 co-operation agreements with foreign universities world-wide. Within the scope of these agreements teaching staff and students from the partner universities visit Bielefeld each semester.

Institutes and other bodies

In addition to the faculties there is also a number of special research fields, research groups and institutions.
