For a brief period it is possible to stay at the youth hostel or perhaps find a room through an agency for rooms in private homes:
The situation on the housing market has eased a little since a lot of new housing has been built. Thus it is no longer quite so difficult to find accommodation.
Both the Studentenwerk and private organisations run halls of residence. The Studentenwerk runs several halls, but these by no means cover the demand for rooms. An application for a place in a hall of residence can also be made from abroad. Everybody who has obtained a place in a hall of residence must produce a certificate of enrolment, at the latest at the time the rental contract is signed.
When applying for housing subsidized for social purposes a Wohnberechtigungsschein (WBS - Certificate of Eligibility for Housing) must be submitted. This can be obtained from the office for housing subsidies and rent assistance (Amt für Wohnungsbauförderung und Wohnhilfe). For the application, a certification of the monthly income and evidence of a residence permit for at least one year is needed.
