Students have to show proof of health insurance when they register at the university. For students from the EU and some other European countries this is usually the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which the student brings with him/her from the home country. It is issued by your national insurance company or government health body. The EHIC has to be presented at registration and students should also show it to and register with one of the health insurance companies in Bielefeld (see addresses below).
Students who are insured by a private insurance company have to submit an adequate proof of health insurance as well. Privately insured students have to turn to one of the health insurance providers in Bielefeld and get a confirmation that they are exempted
from compulsory statuory health insurance regulations. This confirmation has to be presented at registration.
Please note: In this case costs that arise due to illness have to be taken over by the patient first and then settled with the private insurance company at home.
As this can be complicated and takes time, we rather recommend to take out statuory student health insurance in Bielefeld. This means that students are issued a health card
that they present at the doctor's or in a hospital so that charges go directly to the insurance company.
