Welcome Weeks

For all Erasmus and cooperation students the International Office organizes intensive language courses before the lecture period begins. These German language courses are accompanied by an orientation and welcome program for registration, introduction of the study system and all sorts of information about the university and the new surroundings. Also there will be city tours, trips to places in and outside Bielefeld, a welcome party, the chance to meet with student mentors and other activities.

Before winter semester courses start students have the possibility to take part in either a four weeks intensive German language and orientation program (begin in September) or can alternatively attend the one-week language and orientation program in October, if their knowledge of the German language is already advanced.

Before summer semester classes start a three weeks intensive German language and orientation program takes place (begin in March).

It is possible to receive 3 - 5 credit points for the intensive language courses, if students take part regularly and sit the final exam.

Participation in one of the language and orientation programs is strongly recommended for all cooperation students as they give the best start into the study period in Bielefeld and offer ample opportunity to get to know fellow students. They also guarantee an early and speedy issuing of the student card (including the combined access to the internet and electronic information system of Bielefeld University) and of the ?Semester-Ticket? for free public transport in Bielefeld and surroundings.

Dates for the language and orientation programs can be found in the Infosheet on this website. For the first welcome meeting please bring the following:

Please bring this in cash as otherwise the registration cannot be done on the first day and issuing of the student card and ?Semester-Ticket? for free public transport will be delayed.

During the semester German language courses for up to 10 credits will be offered free-of-charge to exchange and cooperation students. Registration will take place during the orientation program.

The electronic course schedule for each semester will be published about four months before the lectures start, i.e. mid-June for the following winter semester and mid-January for the following summer semester: www.uni-bielefeld.de/ekvv/.
