A stay abroad is often more expensive than studying or participating in an internship at the home university. This is due to the following factors:

  • travel costs
  • possible enrolment and tuition fees
  • higher costs of living
  • foreign health insurance, Visa

Nevertheless, there are many funding opportunities available to enable you to study abroad.

+ International Office grants

Application deadlines:

  • 15.01.: Practical courses, research visits, theses between 01.02. and 31.07.
  • 31.05.: Study courses, practical courses, research visits, theses, language courses between 01.07. and 28.02.
  • 31.10.: Study courses, practical courses, research visits, theses, language courses between 01.01. and 31.07.

Grant options:

-> PROMOS partial grants
  • DAAD; not for ERASMUS funding!
  • Periods of study between 1 and 6 months
  • Short-term grants for thesis and research visits (not for doctoral candidates)
  • Short-term grants for practical courses outside of the ERASMUS area (from 6 weeks to a max. of 6 months; not for doctoral candidates)
  • Special courses (e.g. Summer Schools) worldwide
  • Minimum average Transcript grade: 2.5
-> Partial grant by the Bielefeld University Society (Universitätsgesellschaft Bielefeld - UgBi)
  • Study periods worldwide
  • Short-term grants for practical courses within the ERASMUS+ area (6 weeks to 2 months)
-> Partial grant by the rectorate (Rektoratsstipendium)
  • Short-term grants for thesis and research visits worldwide
  • Short-term grants for language courses (3 weeks to 6 months) and special courses (5 days to 6 weeks) worldwide
  • Short-term grants for practical courses outside of the ERASMUS area (from 6 weeks)

In addition to the grants awarded by the International Office there are possibilities outside the University to receive financial assistance for studying abroad.

+ Preparation for a stay abroad with children

Parents can also study abroad. The Internet portal, Auslandsstudium mit Kind [Studying abroad with children [in German]] offers information, reports from experience and useful information for families.
