Faculty of Mathematics

Mathematics is one of the founding faculties of Bielefeld University . It represents a broad spectrum of mathematics both in research and teaching . Research activities extend across broad areas of pure and applied mathematics as well as didactics of mathematics. They are embedded in an internationally oriented scientific environment receiving third-party funds.
The mathematics at the Faculty is organized into the fields of algebra, analysis, applied mathematics, and didactics of mathematics. However, this organization does not represent any sharp definition of contents or strict demarcation of fields. The following areas are particularly emphasized : algebra, representation theory, number theory, geometry, topology, harmonic analysis, combinatorics, information and complexity theory, applied analysis, numerical mathematics, mathematical biology, mathematical physics, probability theory/stochastics, statistics, stochastic analysis, and didactics of mathematics.

Alongside numerous projects receiving third-party funds, the extensive research activities and interdisciplinary cooperations at the faculty are based on major research projects and academic departments. The German Research Foundation's (DFG) Collaborative Research Centre CRC 701: Spectral Structures and Topological Methods in Mathematics(SFB 701) ? following the CRC 343 "Discrete Structures in Mathematics" (1989-2000) and the DFG Research group "Spectral analysis, asymptotic distributions and stochastic dynamic" (2001-2005) ? has been running since 2005 and an International Research Training Group IGK 1132: Stochastic and Real World Models since 2007. The Institute for the Didactics of Mathematics (IDM - in German), an academic department of the Faculty of Mathematics, focuses on didactic research to promote the teaching of mathematics in both theory and practice. The IDM also hosts anInformation centre for children with arithmetical difficulties and further services for schools such as the Teutolab Mathematics.

Interdisciplinary ties are cultivated within the framework of several academic departments as well as with the International Research Training Group.

The Research Centre for Mathematical Modelling (FSPM) promotes cooperation with physics, bioinformatics, biomathematics, and chemistry. Its current focus is on advances in theoretical biology, applications of mathematics in the material sciences, and the theory of financial market trends.

The Institute of Mathematical Economics (IMW) focuses on research and teaching in mathematical modelling and economic relations. It promotes close ties between mathematicians and economists.

Currently, 22 professors and 29 academic staff are engaged in research and teaching at the Faculty of Mathematics. There are also roughly 30 posts receiving third-party funds. About 1500 students (52% female) are majoring in mathematics in Bachelor and Master degree programmes (including teacher training), in Bachelor and Master degree programmes in business mathematics, and in the diploma programmes for mathematics and business mathematics that are gradually being phased out (Source: Daten 2010).
