Writing Dissertations

The dissertation is a peculiar kind of text. On the one hand it is part of the qualification process of your particular degree and is graded by a commission. On the other hand, it is a piece of research communication, without a safety net. Because of the dual nature of its character it is sometimes very difficult to clarify and specify aims, requirements and standards for a dissertation project.

Writing a dissertation requires navigating though a particularly challenging process over a long period of time. It is essential to persevere, to act in the right way at the right time, to be prepared to make decisions regularly, to evaluate and to decide on how to handle the breadth of material, where your focus lies, structure, length of text, tone, depth and scope.

If you feel lost and cannot see the wood for the trees, or if you need a fresh start after a lengthy break, feedback from a neutral point of view can be worth its weight in gold.

We can offer you a fresh perspective in our one-to-one advice service.

We offer support in getting started, feedback, a forum to discuss ideas and an overview of the complete writing process and its steps in our Workshops for doctoral students.

If you are looking for help with your written work in English language please contact "Ellipsis", the English Writing Support Centre of Bielefeld University.
