Workshops on Academic and Scientific Writing in English

Our "Writing in English" workshops offer support and peer feedback to doctoral candidates and postdocs in writing and preparing academic publications in the English language.

Due to the very different stylistic requirements across the range of publications and academic disciplines we offer one workshop per year tailored to researchers in the humanities, cultural studies and the social sciences and one for researchers in the natural sciences, life sciences and technical sciences.

Upcoming dates:

Course Leader: Dr. Vera Zegers (Maastricht)

21 & 22 February 2018 | Wednesday 10am - 5pm Thursday 9.30am - 4.30pm | Room will be announced

This workshop addresses the areas which many young researchers in the humanities and social sciences in our experience find challenging when writing academic texts in English. By the end of the course, participants will have reflected on the various strategies and steps involved in the preparation of an academic publication. They will also have familiarised themselves with the conventions of academic texts in English and acquired useful vocabulary, so that they can produce a professional text. The workshop covers the following topics:

  • Identifying the different stages of academic writing and using effective methods
  • Presenting own ideas in a logical structure
  • Communicating the results and opinions of others in an adequate and correct manner
  • Organising and presenting information clearly, appropriate to your readership
  • Recognising and learning to avoid typical grammatical errors in English
  • Writing effective abstracts
  • Giving and receiving constructive feedback on texts
  • Creatively mastering writing challenges
  • Academic writing in English: useful resources

Further topics can also discussed depending on the needs and interests of participants.

The workshop is conducted in English.
