Mediating Ethnic Identity in the Americas: Ethnic Filmmaking and Film Politics in Globalizing Markets

Marking yet another cornerstone event on the agenda of the ZiF-based research group E pluribus Unum?, this international conference set out to investigate the multivalent roles of the media in the construction of ethnic identities in the Americas. 'Mediating Ethnic Identity in the Americas: Ethnic Filmmaking and Film Politics in Globalizing Markets' met its goal of initiating a broad, interdisciplinary dialogue on the manifold complexities surrounding ethnic self-representations and regimes of representation in the context of mass media, from the viewpoint of film studies, cultural studies, North American and Latin American studies, as well as visual anthropology and sociology. The conference program was complemented by workshop talks featuring internationally acclaimed filmmakers Marcelina Cárdenas (Bolivia), Marta Rodríguez (Colombia), Iván Sanjinés (Bolivia), Jeanette Paillán (Chile) and Gregory Coyes (Canada).
