Beyond the Human

Date: June 11 - 12, 2010

Organizers: Jan C. Joerden (Frankfurt (Oder)), Eric Hilgendorf (Würzburg), Felix Thiele (Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler)

The Workshop ‘Beyond the Human’ dealt with postmodern conceptions of the human and their implications for human dignity in the light of recent scientific developments. In the last decades, there has been an increasing mechanization of medical diagnostics and therapy as a consequence of scientific progress. This development has provoked critical discussions in regard to the demarcations between the human and the animal, as well as to those between the human and technology. The focal point of the debate was the question whether the creation of chimeras and hybrids (fusion of human and animal cells, possibly even with ability to grow and develop) for the sake of scientific research and for finding cures for diseases violates the principle of human dignity and, furthermore, whether these creatures have a personal status. Up to now, it has been beyond all doubt that the definition of a human being is bound to its birth, i.e. to the fact that the person is born and is not made. However, with the increasing technologies, the human being finds herself/himself to be a designer product of a genetic manipulation or a product of a foreign will. The question whether there is henceforth no limit to our powers of imagination concerning the meaning of the term ‘Beyond the Human’, does not have a definitive answer and to clarify this problem was one of the tasks of this workshop.
