Expertise on the future

Date: January 23 - 25, 2013

Convenors: Daniel Barben (Aachen, GER), Alfons Bora (Bielefeld, GER) und Sascha Dickel (Berlin, GER)

In innovation management, research policy, futures studies, and technology assessment new kinds of knowledge practices have emerged which aim to provide strategic intelligence for dealing with major challenges of the future. However, in a society shaped by technological acceleration, information overload, and increasing global interdependency, the status of foresight practices seeking to gain knowledge about complex developments remains fragile. Against this background, we explored how expertise on the future is generated, legitimized, and used-and how it gains social acceptance. Our conference combined insights from history, philosophy, and social science regarding the construction of future-related knowledge.
