Theory of Mind, Simulation and Meta-Cognition - Laureate's Colloquium with Josef Perner

Date: January 29, 2013

Convenor: Hannes Rakoczy (Göttingen, GER)

On January 29, Josef Perner was awarded the Bielefelder Wissenschaftspreis. Every other year the Sparkasse Bielefeld Foundation awards this prize in remembrance of the sociologist Niklas Luhmann to scholars whose research complies with the highest academic standards and has been of outstanding importance to interdisciplinary research - just like that of Niklas Luhmann.
Thirty years ago the psychologists Heinz Wimmer and Josef Perner published the probably most famous experiment in the field of developmental psychology: the 'false belief task'. They established the fact that children at the age of five understand that others have false beliefs, at the age of three, however, they are not yet in a position to be aware of that. The realisation that 'false beliefs' may offer experimental benefit triggered research into the 'Theory of Mind', ToM for short.
