Dimensions of Measurement

Date: March 14 - 16, 2013

Convenors: Alfred Nordmann (Darmstadt, GER) und Oliver Schlaudt (Heidelberg, GER)

The practice of measurement unites scientists and engineers across the disciplines, and it raises questions that range from metaphysics ('what is it that we are measuring?') to epistemology ('do we know things when we can measure them?') to social theory ('what kind of world and what kind of people are we making when we render things measurable?') all the way to literature ('how engaged is the poet who uses words to measure rather than reflect the world?'). Around this range of questions the international conference 'Dimensions of Measurement' convened 11 keynote speakers, 45 presenters of papers, and numerous discussants. The first of its kind in many decades, the conference made a case for the renewed interest in a (historical) epistemology of measurement.
