The Importance of Being Dead - The Dead Donor Rule and the Ethics of Transplantation Medicine

Date: September 12 - 14, 2013

Convenors: Bettina Schöne-Seifert (Münster, GER) and Ralf Stoecker (Bielefeld, GER)

Due to current discussions the workshop 'The Importance of Being Dead' deals with the important question, if the Dead Donor Rule is a normative indispensible norm. This question arises from uncertainties about death with regard to vital organ donation after brain death and cardiac arrest. A workshop at the ZiF, from September 12th to the 14th organized by Bettina Schöne-Seifert and Ralf Stoecker served as a forum to debate the questions when exactly a human being is dead and which normative significance his death has for the justification of organ transplantation.
