ZiF Workshop

The Ethics of Copying

Date: 8 - 11 July 2014

Convenor: Reinold Schmücker (Münster, GER)

The conference attempted to be a starting point for the development of an ethics of copying that is conceptualized as a normative discourse about the legitimacy of copying processes. It focused on the role copying plays within the cultural evolution in general and the development of science and art in particular as well as on recent research that has already been done in various disciplines in order to establish the basis for an ethics of copying. Due to the lack of a sufficiently elaborate theory of copying and copies that would cover the various phenomena in this area, the conceptual and ontological bases of an ethics of copying were discussed in particular. Furthermore, the conference gave proof that an ethics of copying has to confront a demanding challenge: on one side, it should try to establish rules that reach a certain degree of objectivity and that are applicable to many different cases of copying. On the other side, it should not lose sight of the historical and cultural variety of existing norms, rules and ideas of property, forgery, authenticity and authorship.
