The Transformation of History

Date: 10 - 12 September 2015

Convenors: Leitung: Paul Nolte (Berlin, GER), Manfred Hettling (Halle (Saale), GER), Christina von Hodenberg (London, GBR), Cornelius Torp (Halle (Saale)/Augsburg, GER), Willibald Steinmetz (Bielefeld, GER)

The transformation of history since the 1960s is in many ways exemplary for the emergence of new disciplinary and epistemic patterns in the humanities and social sciences. In the Federal Republic, the Bielefeld historian Hans-Ulrich Wehler (1931-2014) was a leading advocate of history as an interdisciplinary enterprise that was to be based in the social sciences, and at the same time fulfilled a wider political mission for post-Nazi Germany. The conference reviewed aspects of this transformative change over the past half century in the light of current approaches and innovations such as global history, or a new history of capitalism. The results underscored the profound significance of the shifts that began in the 1960s, in a way that eventually transcended the intentions of the protagonists such as Wehler: History was newly established not just as a "historical social science", but as a discipline in a permanent state of flux and reinvention.
