Globalisation - Transnationalisation - Society: An Interdisciplinary Dialogue between Theories of Society and Cross-Border Studies
Date: 15 - 16 February 2018
Convenors: Anna Amelina (Cottbus, GER), Manuela Boatcă (Freiburg i.Br., GER), Gregor Bongaerts (Duisburg, GER), Anja Weiß (Duisburg, GER)
The conference brings together scientists (sociologists, social anthroplogists, political scientists, historians) from two different fields-social theory and theories of society on the one hand and theories of globalisation, transnationalisation and postcolonial studies on the other. The aim of the conference is to develop a systematic dialogue between the two research fields. The mutual exchange between the two fields is promising because they tend to question (explicitly or implicitly) the methodological nationalism in social sciences, also paying attention to the notion of social transformation as well as to cross-border institutions and networks. The mutual inspiration between both fields of studies will be based in reflection of the concepts of social differentiation, the analysis of the relationship between the
society and its
boundaries as well as the discussion on the semantics of
cross-border relations. The added value of the conference is the development of a common analytical vocabulary that can resonate across disciplinary boundaries.
