The Board of Directors consists of five scholars of Bielefeld University and one representative each of the academic and non-academic staff of ZiF. It elects from its five scholarly members the Managing Director and the Deputy Managing Director.

• Four of the scholarly members are nominated by ZiF's Advisory Council and appointed by the Rektorat of Bielefeld University for four-year terms (one-time re-appointment is possible).
• The fifth member is one of the Vice-Rectors of Bielefeld University.
• The representatives of ZiF's staff are elected from these status groups for four-year terms (re-election is possible).
• The (Deputy) Managing Director is elected for two years (re-election is possible).
