Major studies since the 1980s: the development of Indian social and ethnic movements and state politics, especially in Bolivia, Ecuador and Guatemala. Within this framework, the deconstruction of ethnic discourse and life narratives of indigenous leaders, with particular consideration to gender. From an actor's perspective I concentrate on the analysis of the internal structures of social and ethnic organization and the norms which shape the actor's behaviour. This motivated me further to study gender and domestic violence in Indian communities, Indian jurisdiction, women's rights, and citizenship in the Andes and Guatemala; and discourses on indigenous identity considering the global feminist and human rights debates. Since my dissertation I went on studying evangelical fundamentalist movements in Latin America, specially the impact on Indian societies and also their action within the political arena. As a participant of the international research project, "Multicultural Autonomy - a necessary condition for sustainable development in Latin America (Latautonomy)", as well as during a study looking at the World Bank, I analysed the conceptual and practical work of international cooperation development agencies and their impact on Indian communities in Bolivia. Both studies were based on a large fieldwork. As a consultant I participated in planning and evaluating bilingual intercultural education reform projects in several countries in Latin America.
Based on my own biography I am currently working on an project of recent history: Memoria - Biografía individual y procesos transnacionales: Sobre emigrantes alemanes, nazis y judíos refugiados y el papel de las relaciones bilaterales entre la Alemania de posguerra y Bolivia entre 1952 y 1972."
