Stefanie Becker was awarded her PhD in Cognitive Psychology in 2007 from Bielefeld University. Immediately afterwards, she worked on an US air force grant awarded to Prof. Roger Remington at the University of Queensland in Australia. From 2009 onwards, she has been employed on fellowships from the University of Queensland (2009 – 2011) and the Australian Research Council (ARC, 2011 - present). For her work, Stefanie has been awarded several national and international prizes, amongst them the National German Dissertation Prize, the International EyeTrack Award, and an Australian Psychology Society Early Career Researcher award.



Current Main Research Interests

Stefanie's main research interests revolve around visual attention and eye movements and one of her main aims is to identify the factors and mechanisms that drive visual selection and eye movements. She recently discovered that object features (e.g., color, size) are not processed independently of one another, but relative to features in the context (e.g., redder/greener, larger/smaller), and proposed a new relational account of attention and eye movements to account for these findings. In addition to this work, she is involved in an fMRI project with Charles Folk, Jason Mattingley, Roger Remington and Steve Yantis, which aims to identify the neurophysiological correlate of involuntary attentional capture. In collaboration with Gernot Horstmann and Ottmar Lipp, Stefanie is also invested in a project that examines the factors and mechanisms that drive attention and eye movements in visual search among emotional faces.
