40 Years of ZiF: 1968–2008

On October 20, 2008 the ZiF celebrated its 40th anniversary, retrospectively seen these have been four decades of successful work—a development highly appreciated by Bielefeld University of which the ZiF is a part and whose international reputation the ZiF has contributed to decisively. ZiF's main building houses a spacious Plenary Hall, five conference rooms of different sizes and generous foyers for discussion and talks as well as the library. A staff of more than 20 - with their office doors always open - help create excellent scientific working conditions at the ZiF.

Apartments of various sizes - situated on a park-like campus - are available to non-resident researchers and their families. Social life isn't forgotten: the fellow-room, jointly used for making music, is as much appreciated by members of the research group as the inhouse swimming-pool.

Since its foundation, the ZiF has been supporting different working formats: author's colloquia and conferences of several days' duration as well as research groups that may last about three years including preparation and follow-up. To trigger new developments within the research landscape, the Young ZiF was founded in 2002.

Situated attractively on a hillside, the ZiF is by no means an ivory tower. The ZiF keeps inviting the interested public on various occasions, e.g. to well-received ZiF: lectures - always held by prominent scientists - but also to author's readings or open days. At regular intervals, the ZiF foyer hosts art exhibitions accompanied by the 'Zeitskulptur' on display for always one year in the ZiF front yard.
