ZiF Summer School 2016
Randomness in Physics and Mathematics: From Spin Chains to Number Theory
8 - 20 August 2016
Convenors: Gernot Akemann (Bielefeld, GER), Friedrich Götze (Bielefeld, GER)
The second international ZiF summer school on Randomness in Physics and Mathematics took place in August, being equally successful as the first event in 2013. The majority of the 40 participants from several continents were PhD students, with some young postdocs and a few senior colleagues. They all took part in the eight lecture series by world leading experts from mathematics, mathematical physics and physics. We were particularly fortunate that so many outstanding colleagues agreed to come and teach, including one Fields medallist, Martin Hairer and Leibniz price awardee Martin Zirnbauer. The topics covered a broad range of subjects, from statistical mechanics and many-body quantum mechanics over regularisation of stochastic partial differential equations to random polynomials and number theory. They were complemented by an introduction to random matrices.
The excursion at the end of the first week led us to the LWL open-air museum in Detmold. After spending a sunny afternoon with two guided tours in its splendid surroundings the excursion ended with a brewery visit and hearty diner. Many participants stayed for the specialised workshop following the school and expressed their great satisfaction with the programme. We hope to see them again in Bielefeld.
