Junior Research Groups

Junior Research Group "Science,Values and Democracy"

The Junior Research Group will examine the relation of scientific and societal values, especially with regard to political values. First, the group will study the history and legitimization of the various institutional and substantive values that shape science. A key question in this regard is whether extra-scientific values threaten the objectivity of science. Second, the group will investigate how scientific knowledge and practices shape society and politics, e.g., through science advisory bodies, science communication, and the public outcomes of scientific research. The co-leaders of the group areDr. Mark B. Brown(political science), whose work addresses the epistemic value of democratic processes and institutions, and Dr. Cornelis Menke(methodology), who works on the epistemic value of the institutional constitution of science.
