Requirements

What requirements do I have to meet if I want to apply for one of the grants advertised?
We are looking for applications from graduates who plan to work for a PhD or a postdoc qualification with a clear historical or sociological focus.
Applicants for a doctoral scholarship must hold an excellent degree in a humanities or social science subject, preferably history, sociology, social anthropology or political science

Applicants for a postdoc grant must have an outstanding doctoral degree in a humanities or social science subject as well as a stung interest in interdisciplinary work.

Deadlines

What are the application deadlines?
The deadline for all grants is identical: applications are available on the BGHS website until December,12th 2010.
Will late applications be considered?
Consideration of late applications (i.e. applications that reach the BGHS after December, 12) cannot be guaranteed. The BGHS applications website will be shut down about one week after the application deadline.

Applications

What documents do I have to enclose with my application?
Besides the usual information on applicants and their academic career, applications must include the following items::

Letter of motivation (300 to 400 words)
Outline of dissertation project (3,000 to 4,000 words)
CV (Curriculum vitae)/Résumé
Names and contact details of two academic referees
Certified copies of degree documents
Can applications be sent by normal mail?
Applications sent by normal mail cannot be processed.

Grants

Will I have to pay tax on my grant?
Grants are exempt in Germany from tax as well as social security payments as they do not come under German tax laws.
How much are the grants worth?
The amount of the grants is set in line with the rules and regulations of the German Research Foundation (DFG).

In addition to the doctoral and postdoc grants, funds not exceeding EUR 103 per month are made available for office supplies and materials.

Where appropriate a child allowance according to the regulations of the DFG will be added.It amounts to

  • 400 EUR for one child,
  • 500 EUR for two children,
  • 600 EUR for three children.
For each additional child the amount will be increased by 100 EUR

Doctoral Grant

  • Basic grant of EUR 1.197
  • Office supplies supplement of EUR 103
  • Where appropriate - child allowance

The size of the postdoc grants is calculated on applicants' age:

  • Basic grant
      • Basic grant up to 30 Years 1.365 Euro
      • Basic grant 31 to 34 Years 1.416 Euro
      • Basic grant 35 to 38 Years 1.467 Euro
  • Office supplies supplement of EUR 103
  • Where appropriate - child allowance
