Research at the BGHS

The BGHS is one of few Graduate Schools that does not limit the thematic scope of its researchers' projects. Any dissertation project can be completed at the BGHS for which we can ensure expert supervision by one of our professors. The only criterion for acceptance to the Graduate School is the academic quality of the planned research project.

Areas of Research

Before applying for admission to the BGHS, doctoral researchers who wish to complete their research projects at the BGHS should first speak with professors active in their research field of interest at the relevant faculty. Initial orientation in your search for a supervisor is offered by the websites of the Faculty of Sociology and the Department of History. On the Graduate School website you will further find an overview of the research areas in which supervision of doctoral projects is possible.

Research quality

To ensure the quality of the research conducted at the Graduate School, applications for admission are subject to a selection and evaluation procedure. Dissertation proposals are only accepted when the planned research project is deemed scientifically promising and can be supervised at one of the two faculties. Decisions on acceptance in the doctoral programme are made by the doctoral selection committees of the respective faculties.

Promotion of research

The BGHS promotes its members' research projects in many ways. Up to October 2012, all junior researchers at the Graduate School can apply for grants for the costs of their field research, archival trips and travel to conferences. Furthermore, the costs of transcription, copying and proofreading are covered as well as costs for language classes and other courses important for the dissertation project. By providing funds for the organisation of workshops, conferences and symposia, the BGHS encourages its doctoral researchers to organise their own events. You will find more information on applying for research grants here.
