The Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology is a joint institution of the Department of Sociology and the Department of History at Bielefeld University. Both departments enjoy an outstanding reputation nationally and internationally, and both cooperate closely in research and teaching, including collaboration in three research training groups, one Collaborative Research Center, and two master's programmes.

With the foundation of a common Graduate School, the Department of History and the Department of Sociology expect to strengthen their existing cooperations and open up new fields of jointly organized research at the doctoral level and beyond. Currently, the joint activities of the two departments in interdisciplinary graduate education are concentrated in three areas of research:

  • institutional/ epistemic forms of science and technology and their patterns of change,
  • the political as communicative space in past and present societies,
  • processes of globalization and structures of world society.

Three new areas of common research will include:

  • studies in historical and comparative semantics,
  • social inequalities in past and present societies,
  • transformations of kinship and the construction of biographies.

The Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) and various services provided by the university as well as the two departments' networks and international partners make up the school's subsidiary context.
