Profile of the Graduate School
The Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology is a joint institution of the Department of Sociology and the Department of History. It provides an inspiring research environment for a diverse group of about 160 doctoral candidates, and integrates research on a broad variety of topics.
PhD Research under one umbrella
The Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology will offer a structured doctoral training program for scholars working in either one of the two disciplines or on interdisciplinary projects. In addition to the two departments' own doctoral candidates, the Graduate School will be open to doctoral candidates from other fields who do research on promising topics with a historical or sociological perspective. Hence, the school will be characterized by thematic breadth and the fair competition of different approaches. One integrating measure will be the Graduate School's strong emphasis on theoretical and methodological training for all doctoral scholars.
With this emphasis the school functions as an umbrella under which students are already integrated into research training groups, co-workers in research projects, and young researchers with individual grants will co-exist and benefit from each other.
Organizational Chart of the Graduate School
The organizational structure of the Graduate School in History and Sociology is characterized by a flat hierarchy and encompasses the two departments with their affiliated institutions, the school's executive committee, and its management.
The Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) and various services provided by the university as well as the two departments' networks and international partners make up the school's subsidiary context. At the core of the school is the research community consisting of the doctoral candidates, professors, and teaching staff of the two departments, including seven postdoctoral scholars, together with the three existing research training groups and the junior research groups.
