The usual way to gain a doctorate is to participate in the Department's International PhD Study Programme. However, in exceptional cases, it is also possible to obtain a doctorate outside the program (see Doctoral Regulations, major PhD progam university of Bielefeld & Study Regulations).
The PhD Programme is an integral part of the Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology (BGHS). The BGHS is a joint institution of the Department of History and the Faculty of Sociology (supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German Research Foundation as part of the Excellence Initiative).
In line with the Bielefeld Model of theoretically and methodologically oriented historical research, the PhD Programme encourages interdisciplinary approaches towards historical topics and strongly supports the international networking of doctoral students. The research environment at Bielefeld University is both diverse and inspiring: it comprises numerous seminars and research colloquia covering a broad chronological and thematic spectrum, study groups, and several research networks (Research profile).
