Health literacy, patient information and counseling
Health literacy is not only essential in coping with health impairments and (chronic) disease, but also in meeting the challenges of maintaining good health, coping with increasingly complex health care systems, and making informed decisions.Health literacy encompasses functional literary skills, as well as the knowledge and ability to search for, understand, evaluate and apply health information.
International studies have already indicated for some time that the health literacy of the population needs to be improved. Recently, this has been confirmed by initial findings from Germany. This research area of the working group 6 intends todevelop viable concepts to measure and strengthen health literacy, information andcounseling, and to augment the availability of data.
