Due to the rapid increase in various professional fields of practical media work areas, the task of university teaching is to train students in the field of media competence. The M.A. Program in Inter-American Studies regularly offers practical media study projects, where students can design and implement their own projects. In recent years some remarkable projects have been created, of which you can take a closer look following the link below.
The current living environments of indigenous peoples are in the process of drastic change. These originate from dual causes: migration movements and globalization, and from a changed cultural and political self-conception of indigenous groups. In order to attract a broader audience, audio-visual and interactive elements have been implemented in this exhibition, providing insights about several topics such as environmental degradation, gender issues, urbanization, and the politics of representation. Concurrently, the exhibition focuses on the issues of the European views of the “other“ and on the intercultural experiences of alienation.
During winter term 2009/ 2010 several documentary films were produced in the seminars “The Business of the “Americanness“ in the Americas“ given by Luz Angélica Kirschner and “Culturas híbridas: Aportaciones latinoamericanos a la teoría cultural y los estudios de los medios“ taught by Sebastian Thies. The link below details the respective synopses of the film projects and the documentaries.
After the coup in 1973, many Chileans were forced to leave their country. About 7000 of them came to Germany and for a few of them exile persists even today. This radio feature reports on the political and historical background of exile, the arrival of the Chileans in Germany, the solidarity work, the conflicts among the Chileans and the post-exile period. Students of Spain and Latin America Studies at the University of Bielefeld produced this radio feature, in reference to the course “La cultura y literature del exilio chileno“ held by Sebastian Thies in winter term 2004/05.
The Summer School of the Inter-American Studies afforded the students to participate in an intensive two week project about the Latin American documentary film. Several international teachers gave introductory workshops about their own working methods, including the highly acclaimed Argentine documentary filmmaker Ernesto Ardito. Introduced topics covered areas such as “narrative structures“, “documentary aesthetic“ and the “construction of social reality“, which students could apply immediately within the practical group work phase.
