The scientific monitoring and evaluation of the CIVITAS programme

Short description
From 2001 to 2007 the German Federal Ministry for Families, the Elderly, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ) funded the CIVITAS scheme, an intervention programme to support structures and processes of the civil society in the newly-formed German states. The scheme had been started in response to the occurrence of xenophobic and right-wing extremist attitudes and activities. Its aim was to support mobile counselling teams, victims counselling and network centers as well as initiatives to promote engagement in civil society.

The scientific monitoring and evaluation of the programme was conducted by the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research on Conflict and Violence from August 2002 until March 2007. It analysed the work done by structural projects aiming at counselling, networking etc., as well as the role of initiatives in municipal social spaces. The focus was on context analyses in the municipalities. The research was conducted by the Berlin branch of the Institute.
