The Faculty of Linguistics and Literary Studies ("LiLi") was founded in 1972. Its goals were interdisciplinary right from the very beginning, and it has always emphasized the connection between theoretical-systematic and practical applied research perspectives. Today, there are 30 professors and more than 90 academic staff members doing research and teaching at the Faculty. There are about 2650 students doing their major at the LiLi Faculty, making it the largest at Bielefeld University. It contains the following departments: Linguistics, Literary Studies, British and American Studies, German Studies, German as a Foreign Language (DaF), as well as Art and Music. In addition, there is a Faculty graduate school, the LiLi-Kolleg.
The LiLi Faculty collaborates to a major extent in a number of larger research networks. For example, together with the Faculty of Technology, it is in charge of Collaborative Research Centre CRC 673: Alignment in Communication (SFB 673). It is also closely involved in the Cluster of Excellence CITEC - Cognitive Interaction Technology. The Literary Studies department is cooperating with the Faculties of History, Politics, and Law in Collaborative Research Centre CRC 584: The Political as Communicative Space in History (SFB 584). Above and beyond this, there is a newly founded Center for Inter-American Studies.
The Faculty offers a number of Bachelor and Master degree programmes with either a research or a teaching orientation:
- BA programmes: British and American Studies, German as a Foreign Language, German Studies (DAF), Arts and Music, Latin, Linguistics, Clinical Linguistics, Literary Studies, Romance Cultures, and Text Technology.
- MEd and MA programmes: British and American Studies, German as a Foreign Language/German Studies (DAF), Linguistics, Clinical Linguistics, Literary Studies, Interdisciplinary Media Studies, and Inter-American Studies.
- Ph.D: studies leading to a Ph.D. may be pursued either within the Faculty graduate school, the LiLi-Kolleg, or in a free form.
The LiLi Faculty supports internationalization not only on the research level but also within its programmes of studies. It cooperates with renowned European and international universities, thereby allowing a regular exchange of students and teachers.
The LiLi Faculty has a gender equality plan committed to the promotion of women in academia. As a result, it employs a relatively high and continually rising number of female academics.Homepage Faculty of Linguistics and Literary Studies
