Effective support of young researchers is one of the most important strategic aims of the Rectorate of Bielefeld University. To this end funding Bielefeld University provided in the form of the "Bielefeld Young Researchers' Funds" (Bielefelder Nachwuchsfonds).

The Karl Peter Grotemeyer Prize for outstanding achievements and personal engagement in teaching which is endowed with 3000 Euro / p.a. has been awarded since 1996 and is supported by the Westfälisch-Lippische Universitätsgesellschaft (Westphalian-Lippian University Society). It can be awarded to young researchers at Bielefeld University who have already achieved their doctoral or postdoctoral qualifications. Students at Bielefeld University can propose suitable candidates once a year - deadline is 20. December in a given year; suggestions must be supported by a minimum of three students and should be accompanied by information on the suitability of the proposed candidate for the prize in question.

Every year the Westfälisch-Lippische Universitätsgesellschaft offers an award of 3000 Euro for an outstanding postdoctoral thesis as well as faculty-based doctoral prizes of 600 Euro for an outstanding doctoral theses.
The award ceremony takes place in Autumn in the framework of a colloquium hosted by the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research at Bielefeld University. The right to make proposals resides with the Faculties of Bielefeld University. Proposals are assessed by independent reviewers.
