Achieving a balance between research, studying, a career, and family tasks is, in many respects, a major challenge to parents and persons caring for their relatives. The decision to start a family and the first years of children's lives when they need intensive care frequently coincide with decisive academic qualification phases for further career perspectives.
With the goal of improving the balance between career/studies and rearing children/caring for relatives, the Family Service at the university was established on 1 April 2009 as part of the audit for family-friendly higher education. Bielefeld University already received the "family-friendly higher education institute" [familiengerechte hochschule] certificate issued by berufundfamilie GmbH in 2006 and was reaudited in 2009.
