Employment as an assistant lecturer (Qualification positions)

There are a limited number of so-called qualification positions available at Bielefeld University. These positions can help finance a PhD project. According to the current legal regulations, such temporary contract positions can be held - depending on their availability and whether or not position-holders have been employed in a similar position before - for up to six years after a PhD has been completed; the permissible period of temporary contract can be extended for up to two years for every child under 18 cared for the position holder. Positions as assistant lecturers are paid according to the salary regulations for public service in the German federal states (TV_L). Assistant lecturers are usually compensated at the level of salary group 13 TV-L.

The duties and responsibilities of assistant lecturers during their fixed-term contract can include research support, teaching and other services such as support in student and examination administration, student advice, administrative support in scientific units). Regular faculty positions as assistant lecturers are accompanied by a teaching workload of 4 semester hours per week, teaching assistants for specific purposes teach for 13 semester hours per week. Within the scope of both of these qualification categories employees are given time to pursue qualifications relevant to a further academic qualification (e.g. a PhD). Frequently such positions are given as part-time position (usually 50%). In this case, the teaching load is halved.

Further research positions are occupied in third-party funded projects. Details can be found on the website of the individual faculties. Many of these positions are also suitable for people pursuing a doctoral research project.


Doctoral scholarships in the Research Training Groups and Graduate Schools

The various thematically "oriented Research Training Groups and Graduate Schools at Bielefeld University also offer scholarships for doctoral students. A list of the graduate schools and research training groups can be found here.


Doctoral Scholarships Programme of the Rectorate of Bielefeld University (Rectorate Scholarships)

The Rectorate of Bielefeld offers scholarships for outstanding young researchers. Applications are invited once a year. The deadline for applications is 15. October in a given year. The earliest point at which Scholarships can be taken up on 1. January of the next year.

The scholarships are usually for 1000 Euro per month. For scholarship holders with children an additional allowance of 150 Euro per child can be awarded. On top of this, the Faculties can stock up the monthly allowance with up to 500 Euro per month out of Faculty or third-party funding.

Doctoral students can receive Rectorate scholarships for up to two years, although scholarships are awarded for a year at a time and have to be reapplied for. It is also possible to receive a scholarship for a shorter period of time.
