Migrationsdynamiken und Entwicklungskooperation im Raum Sub-Sahara-Afrika/Europa (MISA)

(Dynamics of Migration and Development Cooperation Between Sub-Sahara Africa and Europe)

The project is financed by the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and carried out from December 2007 until December 2008.

MISA explores the dynamics of migration and its interaction with development cooperation in the transnational social spaces spanning Sub-Sahara Africa and Europe. The main cases analysed are Ghana and Mali. Following a transnational approach, the development cooperation and social ties between different contexts, including sending and receiving countries, are taken into consideration. The empirical research focuses on the interfaces between local actors and institutions of German and European development cooperation. A central issue will be how job perspectives and visions of mobility are related with respect to specific periods in the life course of persons, in particular status passages from youth to adulthood. Case studies will be based on data collected through qualitative research. The results are meant to inform the design and the implementation of development programmes dealing with the challenges of migration. They will be placed within a comparative perspective, which refers to the different experiences of European countries in connecting migration and development policies.
The study aims at supporting the BMZ in developing programmes and strategies in the domain of development and migration.

The project is directed by Prof. Thomas Faist, PhD. Members of the research-team are Dr. Nadine Sieveking (Coordination, fieldresearch in Africa), Margit Fauser (EU policies) and Sascha Vennemann.
