Social Cognitive Systems Group

The Social Cognitive Systems Group (headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Kopp) is part of the Cluster of Excellence in "Cognitive Interaction Technology" CITEC (EXC 277) and the Faculty of Technology at Bielefeld University. The group investigates the cognitive bases of social interaction and multimodal communication in humans and artificial systems. Combining methods from Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Science and Human-Machine Interaction, it develops computational accounts of understanding and producing socially intelligent and communicative behaviour in interactive systems such as conversational dialogue agents, virtual avatars in VR, or social robots. The group is regularly involved in research projects funded by DFG, BMBF or EU, in which it explores novel scenarios of human-machine cooperation within industrial, educational, or assisted-living settings.
