The religious fields in Germany and the U.S.A. are constantly changing and developing. Monitoring new forms of religiosity is a continuous task. "Spirituality" has increasingly become popular as self-identification - indicating the development of new forms of contemporary lived religion or religious quest. While in the U.S.A., the preferences for "spiritual" self-identification are monitored for a decade now, we were among the first in Germany to document the considerable number of people who self-identify as "more spiritual than religious". It is interesting that preferences for "spirituality" double for deconverts in Germany and in the U.S.A. (see the publication in the box).
This deserves more attention in research - especially because the semantics of "spirituality" is still an open question. This question is dealt with in our cross-cultural research project which has started in November 2009:
"Spirituality" in Germany and U.S.A.: Analysis of the Semantics, Psychological and Sociological Correlates and Biographical Contexts of a Self-Attribution.
