Foundation Course

Conception and realisation of courses

Length of course: 60 work units

Aim: Planning, realisation and evaluation of a course.
Main study methods: Workshops, self-study and sitting in on colleague's lectures /seminars.

The foundation module runs over one semester. Fixed study groups facilitate a trusting environment when sitting in on colleagues' seminars and for feedback purposes.


Application for the upcoming course

The deadline for application is 01 June 2016. The next course begins in July 2016. Please get in touch with the contact named above if you would like to take part.

To register, you need to sign a contract with the course leader. The foundation module is limited to 15 participants. If there are more than 15 applicants, the course leader will make a selection. Details about the scope, structure, contents and practical elements of the course are provided at an information event on 12 May 2016, 12pm (Room: C2 136), as well as individually by appointment.



Workshop: course planning 1: foundation (14 work units)

25 & 26 July 2016, 10am to 5pm

This opening workshop gives you an overview of the complete foundation module. You learn approaches to integrated course planning (coordination of study activities, feedback and forms of examination) and are given tools with which to prepare courses. On request, participants may be introduced to E-learning instruments that can be used to plan and realise courses. We will also introduce you to the concept of the teaching portfolio as an essential method to reflect on and document your own teaching competence within the framework of the Certificate programme. As well as course input, discussions, individual and group work, the practical use of methods and techniques offer opportunities to test concrete ideas for teaching courses, reflect on them and receive feedback. In this initial course we aim to create a good collegial working environment as a basis for the whole module and, potentially, beyond.

The course provides opportunities to

  • reflect upon and clarify your teaching and study aims,
  • select suitable study activities,
  • develop appropriate methods of examination,
  • Familiarise yourself with methods for developing an overall concept for your course.

By the end of the workshop you should have a command of a wide range of methods in order to (re)design your next course based on the triad of teaching-learning aims, study activities and methods of examination.

Practice: Designing your own course (15 work units)

With the help of tools gained in the workshop you prepare a course programme that documents and communicates your course concept. During this phase of independent conceptual work, you can draw on the support and advice of the Teaching and Learning staff.

Workshop: Course planning 2: Consolidation, feedback, exchange of ideas (14 work units)

In this workshop, which takes place shortly before the start of the lecture period, you can review the teaching concepts that you have developed and discuss and develop them further with colleagues. This main purpose of this workshop is to work on and clarify questions that may have arisen while writing your course programme. Questions such as the following may be addressed:

  • How do I structure my course? How do I choose topics and condense contents?
  • Which methods are going to lead to the set teaching/learning goals?
  • How can I guide students to collaboration and utilise teamwork in my course?
  • Which methods of examination suit the aims and processes I have planned for my course? How can I use learning portfolios to document and reflect on learning processes?
  • ...

In correspondence to these questions you develop your specific course design: Didactic methods and media to implement courses are as much at the core of the workshop as techniques on preparation and seminar planning. You will work on your own courses as prototypes for your teaching approach. The particular form of the workshop is oriented towards your questions and course concepts.


Practice: Sitting in on seminars (10 work units)

At the start of the lecture period you will test out your new teaching concepts in your own course. During the semester, colleagues sit in on your courses allowing you to receive feedback and to discuss the implementation of your concepts. The opportunity to sit in on each other's courses forms the basis for feedback on didactic concepts, methods, delivery, student activities and much more.

On the foundation module there are two planned opportunities to sit in on colleagues' lectures/seminars. These take place in tandems established during the preparatory workshops. In order to receive subject-specific feedback as well as comments from an outside perspective we recommend that you arrange one mutual visit each with a tandem partner from within your academic discipline and one with a colleague from an entirely different field. A guest from your own subject can quickly and realistically relate to the subject specific situation and give in-depth feedback related to your subject. In contrast, a guest who has no relation to your subject often sees things that a person from your field may overlook.

Workshop: Introduction to the learning portfolio (7 work units)

This workshop teaches the fundamentals of portfolio work and offers ample opportunity to work on the presentation of your own approaches to teaching. A further central component is the evaluation of colleagues' lectures/seminars.
