Martin Egelhaaf, who was born in 1955 in Tübingen, has been Professor of Neurobiology at Bielefeld University since 1995. He studied at the Universities of Tübingen and Sussex (Brighton, UK). Martin Egelhaaf undertook doctoral and postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in 1985 submitting his PhD and his postdoctoral habilitation to the University of Tübingen in 1985 and 1989 respectively. In 1995 he moved on from the Max Planck Institute to take over as research group leader at the Centre for Visual Sciences of the Australian National University (Canberra, Australia).
Martin Egelhaaf’s main research interests are the neuronal mechanisms underlying visually guided behaviour in insects and the incorporation of principles of biological dissemination of information into artificial systems. He was speaker of the German Research Foundation Graduate Research Training Group “Strategies and Optimisation of Behaviour” and coordinator of the BMBF network MONIST “Simulations about Brains”. Since 2007 he has been a principal investigator in the Cluster of Excellence “Cognitive Interaction Technology” (CITEC) at Bielefeld University.
Martin Egelhaaf was Dean of the Faculty of Biology from 2002 until 2004 and has been vice-rector for research, young researchers and transfer since January 2006.
