The Message of Quantum Science - Attempts Towards a Synthesis

ZiF Research Group Febuary-May2012

Convenors: Jürg Fröhlich (Zürich), Philippe Blanchard (Bielefeld)

The concept of this program is to gather experimental and theoretical physicists who work on various aspects of Quantum Science in the quiet atmosphere of the Zentrum für interdisziplinäre Forschung (ZiF) of Bielefeld University, with the purpose of enhancing scientific exchanges, discussion and collaboration on some of the deep problems in this area of Physics. The scope of our program ranges from problems concerning the foundations of quantum mechanics over quantum many-body theory, in particular the physics of cold atom gases, non-equilibrium phenomena and quantum-mechanical transport theory all the way to quantum information science. Quantum Mechanics is the most successful physical theory existing today. Yet, it still poses puzzles and problems that even specialists tend to have controversial ideas and opinions about. Some of these problems are of a conceptual nature, others of more technical nature. We intend to clarify what some of the main problems are and, hopefully, outline strategies leading towards solutions.

The program will start with a workshop entitled Quantum Mechanics: From Foundations to Quantum Information Science that will take place towards the end of February 2012. A substantial number of internationally well known specialists in this area have already confirmed their participation in this workshop. Subsequently, a number of colleagues with interests in various aspects of quantum science will visit the ZiF for shorter or longer periods, in order to carry out joint research and present research talks. A key concept is to bring together young scientists at the beginning of their research career with more experienced colleagues.

Our program will end with a second workshop on Mathematical Aspects of Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Transport Theory that will take place at the end of April or beginning of May.
