Violence As a Sanctioning Action

In criminological and sociological research violent behaviour, especially among adolescents, is broadly researched. Theoretical and empirical findings indicate different explanations such as learning processes or lacks of self-control to be the main reasons individuals applicate violence. The focus lies on the action itself and the determinants from the past - a fruitful though not sufficient way of analysing violent actions. What is missing in these fields of research is an analysis of violence as a situational reaction to violations of an individual sense of justice that has to be restored. In this view, the setting of the situation as well as the individual dispositions of how to react in such situation is the core part of the explanation. But it is not only violence that can be explained with this special focus: Additionally other informal and more moderate forms of reactions such as verbal confrontations or at least the connivance of experienced injustice can be illustrated. From this point of view, violence is not only an action, but mainly one kind of reaction to a perceived norm-violation that carries aspects of sanctioning efforts.

I aim to give the explanation of violent behaviour a more complex theoretical basis and test my hypotheses with the criminological panel-data of the project Crime in the Modern City (CriMoC) in my research project. It is assumed that violence can be - at least partly - seen as one way of sanctioning and simultaneously restoring the violated sense of justice. Violence is a sanctioning action that is target-oriented and justice-based - therefore the following research questions are of interest:

  1. How can sanctioning actions be defined theoretically?
  2. When and why do people define situations as unjust and worthy of sanctioning?
  3. How do people react when they define a situation as unjust?
