Ankara - Bonn / Berlin - Brussels: The interconnectedness of political communication
The central aim of the dissertation project is to analyse the German-Turkish relationships against the background of Turkish efforts to join the European Community / European Union. The underlying hypothesis highlights the importance of public opinion and 'the media' - single newspapers as well as intellectuals, who convey their messages via the newspapers. Therefore the leading questions of the dissertation do not merely concentrate on the diplomatic level but include varying levels of publicity: Which role does the Turkish approach to Europe take in the German-Turkish relationships? Have Turkish workers living in Germany been 'used' for the purposes of becoming a member of the European community? According to these questions and presumptions the analysis focuses on three levels, namely diplomacy, intellectual intervention and mass media.
