Climate Worlds:
A Global (Media) Ethnography
Since the winter semester 2009 the BGHS cooperates with the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen to support the junior research group "Climate Worlds".
"Climate Worlds" studies whether and how climate change is perceived and interpreted in various coastal areas of the world, and what culture-specific practices have developed locally in the management of marine dynamics. Here rising sea levels are used as an example and ethnographic methods and video analysis will be employed.
Five graduates in social anthropology, cultural studies, political science and sociology from a number of universities in Austria and Germany take part in the project. They are supported by an electronic network for the entire length of their field research. Their observations will be recorded by camera and discussed in video blogs. Before, they have taken part in a prepartory workshop meant to give them some basic qualifications. The research process will be accompanied on film by the documentary film producer Dr. Tink Diaz. The research findings will be worked into a multimedia format.
The project coordinator Dr. Heike Greschke is supporting the group with methodological aspects, during the time of her parental leave in company with Julia Tischler. Prof. Dr. Claus Leggewie (KWI) and Prof. Dr. Jörg Bergmann (BGHS) are in overall charge.
