Dear visitors,

Welcome to the website of the Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology. I'm pleased that you've found us and hope to awaken your interest in our interdisciplinary, top-level, structured (post)doctoral degree programme. On this website you'll find comprehensive information on the Graduate School's structure, organisation and programme. You'll also find the particulars of both the history and the sociology doctoral programmes that share a home in the Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology, as well as information on our application procedures.

The Graduate School sees itself as an international learning community in which doctoral candidates can focus not only on their own subject matter, but can also think about their discipline as a whole and engage in dialogue with researchers from other disciplines. We bank on the bottom-up principle. We believe in the initiative and commitment of our doctoral candidates and encourage a creative, self-determined doctoral culture.

The Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology offers its doctoral candidates a wide range of courses, financial and other assistance and individual mentoring. We give them the opportunity to become highly intellectual, independent and communicative researchers. In our community, doctoral candidates and professors from the History and Sociology departments all join in this unique project.

If our Graduate School appeals to you and you are interested in researching in a stimulating academic atmosphere, you too are invited to apply to our programme with an original historical or sociological research project.

Yours sincerely,
Thomas Welskopp (BGHS Director)
