Photosynthetic microorganisms can use light energy to build up complex, chemical compounds. Depending on the species, certain microalgal strains furthermore show fast phototrophic biomass generation, therefore offering the potential for renewable production of various valuable products.
The department for Algae Biotechnology & Bioenergy at Bielefeld University was founded in 2009 and is part of the Faculty of Biology and of the Center for Biotechnology (CeBiTec).
We investigate the conversion from light energy into chemical energy in fundamental research projects as well as the applied, biotechnological production of valuable products. Products of interest include carbohydrates, lipids, recombinant proteins and other bioactive compounds.
